L’Oréal’s augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) unit ModiFace has unveiled a new app ‘Virtual Nail Salon’ for the iPhone.
The new app features the company’s new hand and nail tracking technology. It applies nail polish shades, as well as textures on live videos of hands virtually.
The latest release comes after L’Oreal acquired Modiface in March this year.
Before the purchase, ModiFace worked on several AR products such as the creation of an evaluation tool for skin health and virtual platforms, which enable users to see the way makeup looks on them.
The app is based on a deep learning model applied to more than 10,000 annotated hand images.
ModiFace CEO Parham Aarabi was quoted by betakit.com as saying: “The primary focal points are to innovate on beauty augmented reality and artificial intelligence, deploy these technologies at scale across L’Oreal brand websites and applications, and to provide these technologies to select retail and technology partners.”
Aarabi further added that the main focal points are to innovate on beauty augmented reality and AI, with plans to further deploy the technologies across the brand websites and applications of L’Oreal.
In August this year, L’Oréal and ModiFace announced a long-term collaboration with Facebook to create new augmented reality experiences delivered through Facebook Camera products.
ModiFace and Facebook will deliver AR-powered make up try-on experiences from beauty brands, such as Maybelline, L’Oréal Paris, NYX Professional Makeup, Lancôme, Giorgio Armani, Yves Saint Laurent, Urban Decay, and Shu Uemura through a direct connection between both platforms.
