AkzoNobel has opened a new technology centre in Songjiang, Shanghai, to focus on innovations in paints, coatings and specialty chemicals.
Equipped with material analysis and performance testing facilities, the €6.5m centre employs 150 scientists, who will create eco-friendly solutions that are based on powder.
AkzoNobel performance coatings business RD&I director Klaas Kruithof was quoted by Globalcosmeticsnews.com as saying: "Innovation and locally developed products and solutions are critical to ensuring that we continue to create everyday essentials that make people’s lives more liveable and inspiring.
"The opening of this new technology center marks another milestone in the company’s organic growth strategy, as we continue to drive our innovation agenda and build a resilient portfolio of more sustainable products."
Last year, the company invested €347m in research and development to focus on creating sustainable solutions.
It also plans to raise its revenue to 20% by 2020 from eco-friendly solutions.
AkzoNobel employs more than 7,500 people in China, which includes 500 in research and development.
AkzoNobel China president and managing director of the decorative paints business in China and North Asia Dr Lin Liangqi was quoted by the website as saying: "China accounts for between ten and 15% of global RD&I investment annually. With Asia, and especially China, upgrading its manufacturing industry protocols, innovative solutions with strong sustainability features will be key to future success.
"The new centre will therefore play a vital role in supporting manufacturing, as well as future markets, such as solar and wind power."
